The Glasgow Botanic Gardens are a must see if you are visiting Glasgow. Glasgow’s botanic gardens were founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkirk a well-known botanist at the time. The garden continued to improve and was moved to a new site in 1839 west of the River Kelvin and in 1842 the gardens opened on their current site.
The famous Kibble Palace large glass framed greenhouse and was originally designed by James Boucher and James Cousland. The building is an architectural spectacle and is a blend of wrought iron and curved glass held up by cast iron. Originally the Kibble Palace was used for public events, but it now solely used for growing plants that come from tropical climates. The major plant species grown there is fern trees that originate from Australasia. However, over the years the iron structure started to corrode and a 7 million regeneration project was put in place.
The Glasgow botanic garden offers lots of activities and there is free weekly guided tours of the gardens. Events vary from week to week, at the moment the gardens has been transformed into the Jurassic Kingdom. Visitors are being taken back 65 million years and can see over 30 life sized dinosaur models.
The moth and bat night is also very popular, where experts demonstrate exactly how they capture moths and what the uses of the moths are. The Gardens also gives back to the local Glasgow community and runs digital photography classes. The class teaches all the basics in one day and Is great for beginners.
